Scott Riggan is preparing for the release of his new album, Shepherds and Wolves, with “Broken Pieces,” a song about believing in restoration when life offers more damage than answers.
The Idaho-based singer-songwriter co-wrote the track with Benjamin Bauman and longtime mentor Randy Thomas, whose credits include Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses,” Sweet Comfort Band and The Allies. Jason Collum and Riggan produced the recording.
“Broken Pieces” centers on a distinction that does not come up often enough in faith-based music: Believing God can handle eternity is sometimes easier than trusting him with Tuesday afternoon.
“I have no problem believing that God is capable of saving my soul,” Riggan said. “But I have sometimes questioned if he can be trusted to supply my needs and help me through when things get tough.”
That tension supplies the song with its strongest lyrical turn: “Help me to know / If I trust you with my soul / I can trust you with my heart.”
Rather than tying everything together with a conveniently placed bow, Riggan lets the uncertainty remain part of the song. The chorus reaches for reassurance, but the verses acknowledge that disappointment, fear and old wounds do not disappear simply because someone knows the right answer.
Musically, “Broken Pieces” leans into the cinematic side of contemporary Christian pop, gradually expanding around Riggan’s vocal rather than rushing toward the chorus. The arrangement gives the central question room to breathe before the song begins reaching for resolution.
The single previews Shepherds and Wolves, due Aug. 28 through NRT Music. The album will address spiritual resilience, discernment, mercy and the damage people sometimes carry away from churches and religious communities.
Riggan recently signed with NRT Music after years of working independently. His catalog includes a No. 1 song at Christian radio and several Top 20 singles. He also serves as a worship pastor in Idaho.
