For decades, John Katina has been known as one of five brothers whose voices make up The Katinas.
Now, he is carving out a separate musical identity as Johnny Leroy.
The Fercury Music artist’s latest song, “Keep Your Head Up,” offers a clearer look at the soulful solo direction Katina is pursuing outside the family group.
The song was written by John L. Katina and Ben Young and produced by Jones Fercury. It blends Christian soul, Urban Gospel and inspirational music around a message of perseverance during seasons when circumstances seem stuck.
Johnny Leroy Gives John Katina a Separate Musical Identity
The Katinas have spent decades operating as a family unit.
Sam, Joe, James, John and Jesse Katina began singing together as children and eventually built one of Christian music’s longest-running family groups.
The brothers released music as the Katina Boyz before shortening the name to The Katinas. Over the years, their sound has moved through contemporary Christian music, gospel, R&B, pop and worship.
John has often served as one of the group’s lead vocalists.
Johnny Leroy, however, gives him room to develop something more individually defined.
It is not the first time a Katina brother has recorded outside the group. John and Jesse both released individual tracks on the 2005 Project HYPE compilation, and John has appeared as a featured artist on other recordings.
Still, Johnny Leroy represents something different: an artist identity being developed separately from The Katinas rather than an isolated guest appearance or compilation track.
‘Keep Your Head Up’ Leans Into Christian Soul
“Keep Your Head Up” centers on the kind of everyday pressure that rarely arrives as one dramatic crisis.
The song moves through financial stress, fading relationships, delayed dreams and moments when God seems silent.
Instead of promising an immediate turnaround, the lyric focuses on continuing forward.
Its central image is simple: keep your head up and your hand to the plow.
Another image compares unseen spiritual growth to seeds developing beneath the soil. The point is that progress may be real even when nothing above ground appears to have changed.
Musically, Leroy delivers the song with a relaxed groove, gospel-influenced harmonies and a soulful lead vocal.
That approach separates the recording from much of The Katinas’ group material while still drawing from the R&B and gospel influences that have always been part of their sound.
The Katinas Are Still a Five-Brother Group
The solo project does not appear to represent a departure from The Katinas.
The group continues to identify its lineup as Sam, Joe, James, John and Jesse Katina and remains active as a five-brother musical ministry.
That makes Johnny Leroy less of a breakup story than an expansion.
After spending most of his career sharing a name, stage and sound with his brothers, John Katina now has another outlet where the musical decisions can revolve around his own voice.
