Lecrae has released “Nuthin,” the first single from his forthcoming seventh studio album, Anomaly.
Produced by GAWVI, the track takes aim at rappers who command an audience but have little to say once the familiar references to money, sex, drugs and status are removed.
Lecrae is not objecting to entertainment or expecting every song to become a lecture. His criticism is aimed at repetition without substance: artists using their influence to recycle the same destructive ideas while offering listeners nothing that might help them understand themselves or the world around them.
The song’s title becomes its verdict. A record may have an expensive beat, a memorable hook and enough confidence to fill an arena, but none of that guarantees it communicates anything worthwhile.
GAWVI gives “Nuthin” a spare, forceful backdrop that leaves plenty of room for Lecrae’s argument. The production knocks without becoming cluttered, allowing the verses to carry the track rather than hiding behind it.
“Nuthin” also offers an early indication of the larger tension behind Anomaly. Lecrae has built a career in the space between categories, making hip-hop shaped by his faith without limiting the music to subjects or audiences traditionally associated with Christian rap.
That position has occasionally left him explaining himself to both sides. “Nuthin” suggests he is less interested in fitting comfortably into either camp than in asking artists to recognize the weight of having someone’s attention.
Anomaly is expected later this year through Reach Records.
