The Sullivan Sisters are turning a breakup into a bluegrass burner on their new single, “Good Time To Say Goodbye.”
Released Aug. 28 through Dark Shadow Recording, the song pairs Soraya Sullivan’s lead vocal with fast picking and sibling harmonies.
At its center is a woman who has had enough of a faithless relationship. Rather than lingering over the damage, she decides it is simply a good time to leave.
‘Good Time To Say Goodbye’ Started With a Co-Write
Soraya Sullivan wrote the song with veteran bluegrass songwriter Jon Weisberger.
Producer Stephen Mougin helped create that opportunity while The Sullivan Sisters were developing material for their first full-length album.
“It’s really cool to hear the results of those writing appointments coming to life within the sound of their band,” Mougin said.
He describes “Good Time To Say Goodbye” as a “fun, grassy number about love gone sour.”
For Soraya, the session also marked one of her first experiences writing with another songwriter.
“This was one of my first cowrites, and I loved bringing this idea to life writing with Jon Weisberger,” Sullivan said. “This song brings an exciting, defiant energy to our repertoire and gives the band a chance to show off their instrumental skills.”
The Sullivan Sisters Let the Band Stretch Out
That instrumental side is important to the recording.
Soraya handles lead vocals and guitar, while Luciya Sullivan adds harmony vocals and banjo. Finn McGuinness plays fiddle, Gabe Zinser handles mandolin and Sammy Mougin plays bass.
Stephen Mougin produced, engineered and mixed the track. David Glasser handled mastering.
Together, the players give the song the speed and bite its lyric needs.
Instead of treating the breakup as something mournful, “Good Time To Say Goodbye” leans into defiance. The result feels closer to slamming the door than looking back through it.
A Debut Album Is Coming in 2027
The new single is another step toward The Sullivan Sisters’ debut full-length album, which Dark Shadow Recording plans to release in February 2027.
Meanwhile, the band has several notable appearances ahead.
Luciya Sullivan is nominated for the 2026 IBMA Momentum Award for Instrumentalist of the Year. The Sullivan Sisters will also perform during IBMA World of Bluegrass in Chattanooga this October.
Then, in January, the group will head to Chicago as an Official Showcase Artist for the 2027 Folk Alliance International Conference.
For now, “Good Time To Say Goodbye” gives the band another chance to show what that larger project may sound like: sharp writing, close harmonies and enough instrumental fire to keep a breakup song moving forward.
