Anthem Edition are building their new EP around songs that felt personal before they ever reached the studio.
Released Aug. 28 through Sonlite Records, Something’s Goin’ On collects three previously released songs with four new selections. The seven-song project moves between upbeat Southern Gospel and more reflective moments.
For Tim Rackley, the key was choosing songs the group could genuinely connect with.
“When we started searching for songs to record, each member of the group had songs that truly spoke to where they are in life right now,” Rackley said. “We knew, if the songs moved us in a powerful way, they would move the listeners as well.”
‘Something’s Goin’ On’ Builds Around Personal Connection
The EP opens with “He Is Who He Is,” one of the songs Anthem Edition released ahead of the project.
From there, the group moves through several different moods.
“He Still Washed His Feet” takes a quieter approach, while “Land of Joy Untold” brings a relaxed country feel. “I’m Another Lazarus” shifts back toward a more upbeat testimony.
Meanwhile, producer Roger Talley adds contemporary touches to focus track “I Am Saved.” The song pairs a large quartet chorus with a direct message about grace and mercy.
“After all, you cannot deliver a song fully if you don’t feel it yourself,” Rackley said.
That idea gives the EP its structure. Rather than forcing every song into one sound, Anthem Edition match each selection with the singer and arrangement that best fit its message.
Anthem Edition Balance Tradition With a Fresh Sound
The group closes the project with “Something’s Going On ’Round Here,” another song released ahead of the EP.
Between the opener and title track, Anthem Edition move through the kind of harmony-driven arrangements that have defined the group’s Southern Gospel identity.
At the same time, the production leaves room for country and contemporary influences.
Rackley said that balance reflects how much the current lineup has developed.
“Filled with strong songs, great harmonies, and messages that point people to Christ, this project blends the best of Southern Gospel tradition with a fresh sound for today’s listeners,” Rackley said.
A New Chapter for a Long-Running Quartet
Anthem Edition began in 2003 as The Old Paths, founded by Doug Roark and Rackley.
The group later expanded from a trio to a quartet and signed with Sonlite Records in 2012.
After a hiatus that began in 2015, the group returned to touring in 2017. Then, in late 2022, The Old Paths became Anthem Edition.
The current era has included new personnel as well. Andrew Utech joined as bass vocalist in 2022, followed by tenor Cameron Edens in 2023.
With Something’s Goin’ On, Anthem Edition continue that chapter with a project built less around a single musical formula and more around songs the group believes it can deliver honestly.
