The Winans family name is woven deeply into gospel music history, but 3 Winans Brothers marks a new configuration for three of its most recognizable voices.
Marvin, BeBe and Carvin Winans have joined together under the name 3 Winans Brothers and released “Move in Me,” the second single from their forthcoming debut album, Foreign Land.
The trio is new, but the chemistry is not. Marvin and Carvin were members of The Winans, the Grammy-winning quartet whose sophisticated blend of gospel, soul and R&B helped carry the genre into broader popular culture. BeBe built his own crossover career alongside CeCe Winans before establishing himself as a solo artist.
“Move in Me” draws directly from that history. Horns, bass and an easy funk rhythm give the song the feel of late-1970s and early-1980s soul, while the brothers trade and stack vocals with the kind of instinct that tends to come from sharing both a stage and a family tree.
The production is polished, but not overly modernized. Rather than chasing whatever currently qualifies as contemporary R&B, the brothers lean into the musical language they helped shape: tight harmonies, live-band energy and a groove sturdy enough to carry a direct prayer for renewal.
The group first introduced itself in 2013 with “If God Be for Us,” performed during the 50th anniversary commemoration of the March on Washington. “Move in Me” offers a livelier follow-up and a clearer indication of how gospel, funk and classic soul will overlap on the full album.
Foreign Land is scheduled for release Sept. 30 through the brothers’ Regimen Records in partnership with BMG and Entertainment One Music. The album is expected to include production from Rodney Jerkins, Daniel Weatherspoon and Warryn Campbell.
After decades of Winans recordings in nearly every possible family combination, there is something almost surprising about Marvin, BeBe and Carvin only now making an album as a trio. Then again, the family reunion calendar is probably complicated.
