Mark Bishop holding a suitcase for “Unpack That Suitcase”

Mark Bishop Unpacks Life’s Hidden Baggage

Mark Bishop turns everyday worry into luggage on “Unpack That Suitcase,” available now through Sonlite Records.

The energetic country-gospel song considers how small burdens slowly become an overwhelming load. However, Bishop does not leave listeners carrying it alone. The central image points to Jesus’ invitation to exchange that weight for something lighter.

‘Unpack That Suitcase’ Counts the Hidden Weight

Bishop said worry rarely arrives all at once. Instead, people collect pieces of it through grudges, anger, hurt feelings and daily pressure.

“It’s so subtle and gradual, I tell myself that I can handle it fine,” Bishop said.

Eventually, the combined weight becomes harder to ignore. “Unpack That Suitcase” uses that familiar experience to reconsider what Jesus meant when He described His burden as light.

The metaphor also gives Bishop room to ask a more personal question. What are people still carrying simply because they have grown accustomed to the weight?

A Heavy Subject With a Light Step

Despite its subject, “Unpack That Suitcase” does not sound weighed down. Producer Jeff Collins places the message inside a lively country arrangement with a clear Southern Gospel foundation.

Collins plays piano, while Tony Creasman handles drums. David Johnson contributes acoustic guitar and fiddle. Jeremy Medkiff plays electric guitar, and Mark Fain adds bass.

The upbeat production reinforces the song’s conclusion. Relief does not come from becoming strong enough to carry everything. Instead, Bishop points toward the freedom of finally putting the baggage down.

The single continues a four-decade recording career that began with the Bishops in 1984. Bishop later built a solo catalog as both a singer and songwriter. His album Beautiful Day received a Best Roots Gospel Album nomination at the 2021 Grammy Awards.

“Let Jesus help you unpack that suitcase,” Bishop said.
