The 2022 Grammy nominations are in, and Jon Batiste is leading a larger-than-ever field.
Batiste earned 11 nominations, including Album of the Year for We Are and Record of the Year for “Freedom.” Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. follow with eight nominations each, while Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo received seven apiece.
For the first time, the Recording Academy expanded Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist from eight nominees to 10. That gives voters more music to consider and fans two additional reasons per category to insist the Grammys got it wrong.
The Album of the Year field includes Batiste, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, Bieber, Doja Cat, Eilish, H.E.R., Lil Nas X, Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and Kanye West. The nominees span pop, jazz, R&B, hip-hop and enough high-profile releases to make narrowing the category back down nearly impossible.
Rodrigo earned nominations in all four general-field categories, including Album of the Year for Sour, Record and Song of the Year for “Drivers License,” and Best New Artist. Finneas also appears in the Best New Artist category after several years spent helping his sister collect hardware.
Gospel and Christian music nominees include CeCe Winans, Elevation Worship, Maverick City Music, Kirk Franklin, Tauren Wells, Kari Jobe, Natalie Grant, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Jonathan McReynolds, Mali Music, Jekalyn Carr, Dante Bowe and Carrie Underwood.
