The 2019 Oscar nominations are in, and Roma and The Favourite are sharing the throne.
Both films lead the field with 10 nominations. Alfonso Cuarón’s black-and-white drama earned recognition for Best Picture, directing, cinematography and performances by Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira. The Favourite also landed in the Best Picture race, with Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz receiving acting nominations.
A Star Is Born and Vice followed with eight nominations each, while Black Panther earned seven. The Marvel blockbuster also became the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture, finally giving capes and vibranium a seat at the Academy’s most prestigious table.
The Best Picture field also includes BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book. Together, the nominees cover music, politics, royalty, racism, romance and at least one family dinner that probably should have ended much sooner.
