‘Mank’ Leads a History-Making 2021 Oscar Nominations Field

The 2021 Oscar nominations are in, and even Hollywood’s biggest night looks a little different this year.

Mank leads the field with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, directing and acting recognition for Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried. The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal and The Trial of the Chicago 7 follow with six nominations each.

The Best Picture field also includes Promising Young Woman, giving this year’s race stories about family, protest, revenge, journalism, displacement and the golden age of Hollywood. After a year when many theaters remained dark, the movies still found plenty to say.

The nominations also brought several historic firsts. Steven Yeun became the first Asian American nominated for best actor, while Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim nominated in the category. For the first time, two women, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell, were nominated for directing in the same year.

Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous best actor nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Viola Davis earned a leading actress nomination for the film, making her the most-nominated Black actress in Oscar history at the time.

Here is a look at the nominees in several of the ceremony’s biggest categories.
