Melanie Penn has returned to the Christmas story with Immanuel—The Acoustic Sessions (Deluxe), a 13-track reimagining of an Advent project born during one of her loneliest holiday seasons.
Producer Ben Shive helped Penn recast the songs around acoustic, folk and country textures. Ron Block of Alison Krauss & Union Station, Andrew Osenga and Nathan Duggar are among the musicians who contributed to the collection.
Melanie Penn Expands the ‘Immanuel’ Story
The deluxe edition adds four recordings to the nine-song acoustic set. Three are Penn originals told from the perspectives of people within the Nativity story.
“Follow the Star (Magi)” follows the Wise Men toward Bethlehem. “Immanuel (Shepherd)” captures a young shepherd’s response to the angels, while “There Is Room for You Here (Innkeeper)” turns the familiar rejection at the inn into an invitation to make room for Christ.
Penn and Shive also reshape “Angels from the Realms of Glory” with bluegrass instrumentation and a new chorus.
“This new, complete version of Immanuel is a reimagining of these songs to reflect my life in Nashville and new collaborators,” Penn said.
The project extends a song cycle that began with Penn’s 2017 album Immanuel. She followed it in 2019 with Immanuel: The Folk Sessions, featuring Sandra McCracken and The Arcadian Wild.
A Lonely Christmas Became an Advent Tradition
Penn wrote the original songs during what she described as a heartbreaking Christmas spent alone. Instead of avoiding that isolation, she approached Christ’s birth through the experiences of the people surrounding it.
“The holidays can be difficult and lonely, and we don’t talk about that enough,” Penn said. “Many feel they are on the outside looking in.”
That history gives the acoustic edition more purpose than a routine seasonal remake. The warmer arrangements bring Penn’s Nashville community into songs that began in solitude.
The theme also connects with King Kulture’s recent coverage of Presence Music finding Christmas hope in the middle of grief. Both projects make room for listeners whose holidays do not resemble a cheerful greeting card.
Like Every Moment Holy’s prayer cycle about grief and hope, Penn’s collection treats music as a companion for difficult seasons rather than a way to ignore them.
