Lecrae has released “Nuthin,” the first single from his forthcoming seventh studio album, Anomaly.
Produced by GAWVI, the track takes aim at rappers who command an audience but have little to say once the usual references to money, sex, drugs and status disappear.
Lecrae is not objecting to entertainment or demanding that every song become a lecture. Instead, he criticizes repetition without substance. His target is artists who use their influence to recycle destructive ideas while offering listeners little in return.
The song’s title becomes its verdict.
A record can have an expensive beat, a memorable hook and enough confidence to fill an arena. None of that guarantees it communicates anything worthwhile.
GAWVI Leaves Room for the Argument
GAWVI gives “Nuthin” a spare, forceful backdrop that leaves plenty of room for Lecrae’s argument.
The production knocks without becoming cluttered. As a result, the verses carry the track instead of hiding behind it.
“Nuthin” also offers an early indication of the larger tension behind Anomaly. Lecrae has built a career between categories, making hip-hop shaped by his faith without limiting the music to traditional Christian rap subjects or audiences.
That position has occasionally left him explaining himself to both sides.
Here, he seems less interested in fitting comfortably into either camp. Instead, he asks artists to recognize the weight of having someone’s attention.
Anomaly is expected later this year through Reach Records.
