The 2018 Oscar nominations are in, and The Shape of Water is leading the race by more than a head.
Guillermo del Toro’s romantic fantasy earned 13 nominations. They include Best Picture, directing, original screenplay and acting recognition for Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer.
Meanwhile, Dunkirk follows with eight nominations, while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven.
Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread collected six nominations each. Get Out and Lady Bird earned five apiece, including Best Picture and directing nominations for Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig.
The Best Picture field features war, romance, horror, political history, family conflict and one extremely unusual relationship involving a government laboratory. In other words, the Academy has once again found several different ways to make a trip to the movies emotionally complicated.
