Malcolm Guite’s next Arthurian epic has passed 10,000 preorders ahead of its Nov. 9 release, according to Rabbit Room Press. The Nashville-based publisher says the total sets a new company record.
The Coming of Arthur is the second of four planned volumes in Guite’s Merlin’s Isle: An Arthuriad. The 372-page book returns to Arthur’s youth, long before the Round Table became the center of Camelot.
Arthur Learns How to Lead and Serve
Raised by Sir Ector and instructed by Merlin, the young Arthur must grow into his foretold place as king. His journey brings him into contact with perilous elves, virtuous knights and responsibilities beyond his years.
However, Guite is not simply retelling a familiar legend. He wrote the book while considering what Arthur’s formation might say to young men today.
Guite described contemporary culture as facing a crisis of masculinity. In response, Arthur’s story considers a form of manhood grounded in courage, courtesy and service rather than dominance.
“The kind of manhood that not only leads but also serves,” Guite said.
The oath of the Round Table becomes especially important to that vision. Instead of separating strength from virtue, Guite presents leadership and service as obligations that belong together.
The Coming of Arthur Follows a Prize-Winning Debut
The new volume follows Galahad and the Grail, which opened the series in April. Rabbit Room Press says the first book has sold more than 50,000 copies and entered its fourth printing.
It also won the 2026 Parnassus Prize, becoming the only work of fiction among the six books shortlisted for the award.
Like its predecessor, The Coming of Arthur combines Guite’s poetry with more than 25 full-page illustrations by Stephen Crotts. Writer and mythographer Martin Shaw contributed the foreword.
Rabbit Room Press also reports that the forthcoming book reached No. 1 on Amazon’s new poetry releases chart. That ranking and the preorder total suggest Guite’s long-form verse has found an audience well beyond the usual market for contemporary poetry.
Merlin’s Isle Continues Through 2028
Guite and Rabbit Room Press plan to complete the Arthurian cycle with Days of the Round Table in fall 2027 and The Passing of Arthur in spring 2028.
Guite believes the response reflects a renewed hunger for sustained stories, shared myths and books that reward close attention. For him, the appeal of Arthur lies partly in the legend’s ability to speak across generations without being reduced to another passing piece of online content.
